I love this machine. Quick to make. Easy to use and install. It always makes more than enough so i bag it up and when we have luncheons at work i bring a few gallon bags into work and everyone goes crazy for it because it is "chewy ice". Honestly i can say this is one of the best buys i have done recently.
I should start by saying that I am obsessed with ice and, as pathetic as it may sound, I may even qualify as an ice expert. My all time favorite ice machine was back in the 80s when Subzero used to sell a Subzero-branded ice machine that was actually manufactured by whirlpool. It produced very thin rectangular wafer-like cubes that were unforgettable. That machine died many years ago. I currently have the subzero UC-15I undercounter ice maker (this one is manufactured by subzero not whirlpool) and it produces clear ice and is good except the cubes are too big for my taste and I end up crushing that ice in the blender every time I have a drink. One day I was on Amazon and saw this GE countertop ice maker and I couldn’t stop thinking about it because it claimed to produce clear nugget ice like Sonic. So I bought it for my bedroom and the first one was dead on arrival. I was extremely disappointed. Amazon refunded. About a month later, I saw that the item had a lot more reviews and most of them were positive so I decided to try again and this one worked and I love it. It is a dream. Is it big and clunky? Yes. Does it take up a lot of counter space? Yes. Is it kinda loud and sometimes even keeps me awake at night? Yes. Do I absolutely love it? Yes. Even though I have to manually add water every day for this one and even though it’s definitely not super quiet (whereas my subzero requires no effort and purrs like a quiet kitten), I would say I use this one 80% of the time and the subzero 20% of the time because I like the size and shape of the ice on the GE so much better than the subzero. And actually the subzero does require effort bc I have to crush that ice. Highly recommend.
I've always enjoyed crunching on ice, despite my crunching nearly leading to my brother's insanity and a serious beat down he'd want to give me for my ice crunching habits.
So as weird as it might be to leave this review, if you are an ice crunching aficionado, this is a must buy. A perfect softness/hardness to these perfect little ice nuggets.
Buy it to consume more water.
Buy it to save on dental bills with crunching too hard of ice.
Buy it to bug the hell out of your brother ;) hahaha!
Buy it because, dang, crunching as perfect ice is a dream come true.
I once literally looked into buying one of those huge gas station ice makers that make this kind of ice. But that was just too expensive. For
My family thought I was crazy buying a countertop ice maker for $500. “We can just use ice trays and make ice”. Yeah. We *could* but the ice trays are always empty when I want ice, there is frequently spilled water frozen in the bottom of the freezer, and we never have enough ice for guests and end up buying bags of ice which take up tons of freezer space. So I ignored the naysayers and ordered it anyway.
First impressions: wow, it’s bigger than I realized. It’s also a bit louder than I expected.
1 week: ok, the noise isn’t that bad, I just had unrealistic expectations. Within a few days I stopped noticing when it cycled into production mode. Also: I’m so much better hydrated since buying this! I’m drinking more water, and so is the rest of the family. The ice is perfect and readily available - we’ve never run out. The six of us use a lot of ice and refill the water reservoir roughly every other day.
2 months: happy to say we all still love the ice machine and it wasn’t just a short term novelty. We are still using it every day for glasses of water, and the ice is perfect for ice packs on sport injuries/headaches.
I know it’s a first world bougie appliance but if you’re so inclined, I highly recommend it.
Love it! I actually had a commercial sized unit that had a hard waterline and plumbed drain. When that broken down I couldn’t afford to repair ($3000) to fix.
On comes Opal Ice, far less to buy and while you have to fill the 1gallon tank it recirculates the melted ice to make more. We love it! It has a Bluetooth connection that allows you to run a program (sleep at night or longer hours on the weekend. Super easy to set up we received this in early May and and it is quiet and makes enough ice for a family of six. We have yet to run out of ice.
The ice is soft and chewy, and the machine is much quieter than the commercial machine and 1/3 the size. I have not experienced any of the “complaints” that other mention in their reviews. The unit looks great and only suggestion would be to have a dispenser hopper or the ability to hook into a waterline. also maybe the ability to increase ice production for parties or a higher output unit maybe 3lbs/hr or 5lbs/hr. With a larger 10lb hopper.
Currently I have to fill the tank once every 2-4 days.
The unit is portable enough if you needed to move it or use on a boat or vacation rental.
